How to Compress Images Without Losing Quality

I used to upload images straight from my camera to my website, wondering why the pages took forever to load. The answer was painfully simple: I was serving multi-megabyte files that could have been a fraction of the size. Image compression felt like one of those things I'd get to eventually, until I actually ran the numbers and realized how much speed I was leaving on the table.
There are two kinds of compression you need to understand. Lossless compression shrinks file sizes without changing a single pixel. It's like zipping a folder — the file gets smaller, but when you open it, everything is exactly as you left it. Lossy compression, on the other hand, actually discards some image data that your eyes probably won't notice. The trick is finding the sweet spot where the file is small but the quality still looks great.
I started with lossless compression because it felt safer. Tools that strip out metadata, optimize color palettes, and remove unnecessary header data can reduce PNG and JPEG sizes by 20-30% with zero visible changes. That's basically free performance. When I needed even more savings, I moved to lossy compression for JPEG and WebP. Dropping the quality setting to 80-85% usually looks identical to the original to most people, but the file size can be half of what it was.
What surprised me most was how much I could get away with. I took a 2MB photo from my phone and ran it through a compressor at 60% quality. It came out at 180KB. I stared at both versions side by side on my monitor, zoomed in, and genuinely could not tell the difference. On a phone screen, that gap would be even harder to spot.
Different images behave differently with compression. A photo of a blue sky with no clouds compresses beautifully because large areas of similar color are easy for algorithms to handle. A photo of a crowded street with lots of fine detail needs more data to stay sharp. I learned to judge my compression settings by the image content rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
For web use, I've settled into a workflow that works. I save photographs as JPEG or WebP at around 80% quality. I keep PNGs for screenshots and images that need transparency, and I use dedicated compression tools to strip them down. For SVG files, I run them through an optimizer that removes unnecessary code. Every image on my site goes through at least one compression pass, and my Lighthouse scores have never been happier.
The bottom line is that image compression is one of the highest-ROI optimizations you can make. It takes thirty seconds per image, and the payoff is faster pages, happier visitors, and better search rankings.
