How to Convert Audio Files Without Losing Quality

The settings matter too. Variable bitrate usually sounds better than constant bitrate at the same average file size because it allocates more data to complex passages and less to simple ones. Most modern encoders default to variable bitrate, which is the right call.

Need a small file to email? Convert FLAC to 256 kbps MP3. Need a WAV for a video editing project? Convert FLAC to WAV. Need to put music on an old device that only plays MP3? One conversion, high bitrate, done.
